Follower counts
Why Your Instagram Follower Count Can Stay the Same
Your Instagram follower count can stay the same even when people follow and unfollow you. If 3 people join and 3 people leave, the number stays the same. This guide explains why and how to check your follower list. It does not cover a frozen count or a count that updates late.

Why your Instagram follower count can stay the same
Your follower count is the number of accounts that follow you. The change in this number is called net follower growth.
Here is a simple example. You start with 1,000 followers. Then 3 people follow you and 3 people unfollow you:
1,000 + 3 new followers − 3 lost followers = 1,000.
Six people changed the list, but the total stayed at 1,000. This example only counts new followers and people who leave.
The number can also stay the same if nobody follows or unfollows you. You cannot tell which happened by looking at the number alone.
The same number can mean different followers
Imagine your full follower list has A, B and C. Later, it has A, C and D.
Both lists have 3 people. But B is gone and D is new.
The count tells you how many followers you have. The list helps you see who changed.
Always compare the same type of list. Followers means people who follow you. Following means people you follow. Both numbers can stay the same when someone joins and someone leaves.
A name moving to the top of a list does not prove a new follow. Check who is in the list. Use account IDs when you can. An account ID stays the same even if the username changes.
What a follower tracker can miss
A tracker checks a list at different times. It may miss a change that happens between two checks.
For example, D follows you at 10 a.m. and unfollows you at 11 a.m. You check at 9 a.m. and noon. D is not in either list.
Someone could also unfollow you and follow you again before the next check. The two lists would look the same.
Checking more often can help. But it still cannot catch every action.
You also need a full list. If part of the list is missing, a missing name may not mean an unfollow.
Even with a full list, a missing name does not tell you exactly what happened or why. It does not prove that a post made someone leave. Read our guide to unfollow results for more help.
How to check your follower list
Start with the exact follower number. A label like “10K” may hide small changes. It does not prove that two counts are equal.
Then check the list:
- Save the first list. You need a full, reliable list to start. The first check cannot show who left before you started tracking.
- Check again later. Compare account IDs in the old and new lists. See who is new and who is missing.
- Make sure the check worked. The tracker must be able to read the full list. A missing name in an unfinished check is not proof of an unfollow.
- Check what the time means. It is the time the tracker found the change. It is not the exact time someone followed or unfollowed.
In A, B, C → A, C, D, B is missing and D is new. Keep these results with the old and new follower counts.
How Instoryview checks for changes
Instoryview checks follower counts automatically for free. List scans use credits. A count check reads the total. A list scan compares a list with the last saved list.
You can start a manual scan. It can find new or missing accounts even when the total stays the same. The change must still be there when the next scan works.
Instoryview can track public accounts and lists it can read. It needs a first saved list and enough credits. The time shown is when it found the change.
Read how tracking works for scan times and limits. The activity timeline shows the changes found in the lists you track.
Common questions
Why do I get new followers but my count stays the same?
You may lose as many followers as you gain. Check the exact total and compare full lists. New-follower alerts do not show who left.
Can someone unfollow me without the count going down?
Yes. Someone else may follow you at the same time. The total can stay the same.
Can the count stay the same if nothing changed?
Yes. Nobody may have joined or left. The number alone cannot tell you.
Does “no changes detected” mean nobody followed or unfollowed?
No. A count check only reads the number. A list scan can miss changes between checks.
Can a tracker tell me the exact time someone unfollowed?
Instoryview shows when it found the change. It does not show the exact time the person acted.
Check the list, not just the number
An Instagram follower count not changing means the totals you checked are equal. People may still have joined or left. Compare full lists, check that each scan worked, and keep the results for your next check.
